Solar and Wind Energy Pipeline 10+ GW Solar, Wind and Energy Storage Featured Projects
The projects were selected to pilot innovative, broadly replicable energy storage use cases and business models with multiple value streams, with the goal of priming Massachusetts for increased commercialization and deployment of storage technologies.
Battery energy storage systems support the operation of low carbon energy generation, such as solar and wind, which generate intermittent renewable energy. The BESS will store energy when solar or wind energy is abundant and supply energy to the grid when demand is high.
BESS facilities store energy (charge) when there is a surplus of solar or wind energy and supply energy (discharge) when demand is at its peak and additional energy is required. These systems do not emit any carbon dioxide and help reduce emissions by storing clean energy and dispatching it when required.
With assistance from MassCEC, DOER is conducting a study on mid-to-long duration energy storage. MassCEC and DOER selected Energy and Environmental Economics, Inc. (E3) to assist with the study. This study is in fulfillment of Section 80 of Chapter 179 of the Acts of 2022 (“An Act Driving Clean Energy and Offshore Wind”).
