VCU functioning as the brain of EV coordinates various parts of control unit and makes them working synergetic [Rao2011]. The powertrain battery system of an EV includes battery pack and its battery management system. It crucial that the BMS system controls and manages the battery system properly for its reliable performance in an EV.
A vehicle control unit (VCU) coordinates and manages operations across key electric vehicle (EV) systems. This article reviews primary VCU functions, explores its core physical architecture and protocols, and highlights connectors' crucial role in linking the VCU with various electronic control units (ECUs).
In this article, we explore the critical role of Vehicle Control Units (VCUs) in the EV powertrain. As the central management systems within EVs, VCUs oversee and regulate essential functions like motor management, battery supervision, and energy efficiency.
The precision of the vehicle control module in handling power distribution allows for greater energy efficiency, smooth vehicle operation, and enhanced safety. One of the defining features of a modern VCU in electric vehicle is its ability to perform real-time monitoring and adaptive control.
If anomalies are detected, the VCU can activate safe (limp) mode, temporarily restricting electric motor power output, rotations per minute (RPMs), and regenerative braking. Powered by a microcontroller unit (MCU) or central processing unit (CPU), the VCU (Figure 2) manages vehicle subsystems by interpreting and responding to sensor data. Figure 2.
VCUs work closely with Battery Management Systems (BMS). Advanced thermal management systems controlled by VCUs can improve battery efficiency by 25%, especially in extreme climates. Efficient VCU operations can reduce battery degradation rates by 20%, extending battery life significantly.
