Here are the main causes of voltage rise: When a solar system produces more power than the home is consuming, the excess electricity needs to be exported back to the grid. For this to happen, the voltage from the solar inverter must be slightly higher than the grid voltage to “push” the energy from the inverter to the grid.
For example, if the grid voltage is 230V and the solar inverter gives 235V, then the voltage rise is 5V. This is done by subtracting the grid voltage from the output of the inverter: 235V (solar inverter) – 230V (grid) = 5V. The inverter needs this small voltage rise so that energy can flow from your home to the grid. Why is Voltage Rise Important?
V=I×R In the context of solar systems, this formula helps explain why voltage rise occurs and how it can be managed. When a solar inverter exports excess electricity to the grid, it needs to “push” this energy by creating a slightly higher voltage than the grid voltage. This difference is what we call voltage rise.
When your solar system is producing more power than your home is using, it sends the excess back to the grid. In order for power to flow from your home to the grid, the voltage from the solar inverter has to produce a voltage that is a couple of volts higher than the grid voltage. Voila, Solar Voltage Rise.
According to the Australian Standards AS/NZS 4777, the voltage rise between a solar inverter and the street can be no more than 2 per cent (about 5 volts). In theory, you can use ohms law to calculate the voltage rise of a cable if you know the resistance and reactance of the cable.
Specifically the wires from your inverter and switchboard through to your grid connection point may have too high a resistance. This can be caused by distance, thin wires or bad connections. Your installer should check your home's voltage rise before installing but, unfortunately, many do not.
