With the significant push towards renewable energy, such as wind and solar, the demand for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) has grown exponentially. Most BESS utilize lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries, bringing particular fire risks.
The report is a culmination of a two-year research project examining the characteristics of fires resulting from the overheating of lithium-ion battery energy storage systems (ESS) within residential structures.
In 2019, a fire and explosion at an energy storage system in Surprise, AZ, near Phoenix, was triggered by an overheated lithium-ion battery injuring several first responders and resulting in significant damage to the facility and disruption to the surrounding community.
The Danish guidelines do not specify fire or explosion tests for batteries in BESS systems. In contrast, other countries have such requirements, with UL 9540A often mentioned as the preferred testing standard. No standard method for BESS explosion testing was found.
According to USA1, BESS are required to have smoke or radiant energy sensing systems compliant with NFPA 72, along with backup power. Storage facilities need a fire alarm system triggered by an advanced smoke detection system with an occupant alert, installed according to NFPA 72 guideline.
From a firefighting perspective, managing fires in BESS is a complex task. Recent incidents, underscore the potential for injuries despite extensive precautions. Therefore, ensuring that facilities are readily accessible from public roads, having proper water connections, and detailed action plans are fundamental.
