Super capacitors for energy storage: Progress, applications
Nowadays, the energy storage systems based on lithium-ion batteries, fuel cells (FCs) and super capacitors (SCs) are playing a key role in several applications such as power
Supercapacitors are among the most promising electrochemical energy-storage devices, bridging the gap between traditional capacitors and batteries in terms of power and energy density. Their charge-storage performance is largely influenced by the properties of electrode materials, electrolytes and the underlying charge-storage mechanisms.
Hybrid supercapacitors combine battery-like and capacitor-like electrodes in a single cell, integrating both faradaic and non-faradaic energy storage mechanisms to achieve enhanced energy and power densities .
While batteries typically exhibit higher energy density, supercapacitors offer distinct advantages, including significantly faster charge/discharge rates (often 10–100 times quicker), superior power density, and exceptional cycle life, enduring hundreds of thousands more charge/discharge cycles than conventional batteries.
Understanding the physical mechanisms underlying charge storage in these materials is important for further development of supercapacitors. Here we review recent progress, from both in situ experiments and advanced simulation techniques, in understanding the charge storage mechanism in carbon- and oxide-based supercapacitors.
Supercapacitors are developed within a small industry relative to other types of energy storage, such as batteries. Lithium-ion batteries have become the dominant storage technology for most grid applications through significant investment in innovation and scale-up of deployment, as well as the corresponding increased power densities at less cost.
Supercapacitors can bring many advantages, such as high power density, being maintenance-free, high reliability, and no environmental pollution, which make it stand out from other storage technologies. Moreover, supercapacitors can be widely used in many fields, such as electric vehicles, energy power systems, urban rail transit, etc.
